The Tom Martin Memorial Fund

Tom loved Westies so much that when he died, he asked that all donations be made to Westie Rescue.  Thanks to Tom and Carol's generosity and the love and generosity of Tom and Carol's friends and family, Westie Rescue Houston has been given a wonderful gift.  The Tom Martin Memorial Fund is a fund set aside in Tom's memory to benefit Westies that we have rescued who need extra medical care.  To date, donations to Tom's Fund has helped many of our rescues that we would not have been able to help otherwise.
All donations to Westie Rescue Houston are tax deductable.

The Reason
(Author Unknown)

I would've died that day if not for you.
I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands.
I would've have left this life believing that all humans don't care
Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted,
Skin that isn't flea bitten, good food and enough of it,
beds to sleep on,
Someone to love me, to show me I deserve love just because I exist.

Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands
Your big heart saved me...
You saved me from the terror of the pound,
Soothing away the memories of my old life.
You have taught me what it means to be loved.
I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair why you do it
When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes
You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter
Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.
I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes
In the best way I know how
Reminding you why you go on trying.

I am the reason
The dogs before me are the reason
As are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given
We would die if not for you.

Donations to Tom's Fund
In recognition for your generous donations,
we thank you from each and every paw and tail.
We are in the process of adding the names of the wonderful people who have donated to Tom's Fund.  We have to go back through our records for the past year to gather the names so it may take a bit for us to add your name.  If you have donated to Tom's Fund and would like your name to be added or spelling corrected, to the donor list, please email us at kdmtx@aol.com and let us know.  If you have donated but wish your name to be left off our recognition page, please let us know and we will not have it appear. Thank you for your patience and for your donations.  We owe you much gratitude.

Oscar - January 2008
Oscar was picked up from a local shelter.  He was tagged as a Westie Mix because it was not clear that he was a Westie.  Indeed, Oscar is a purebred Westie.  Oscar was severely underweight and suffers from mange and yeast infection.
June 2008 Update. Oscar's hair is mostly grown in.  He must remain in a cone because he still scratches the hair off of his face.  He has been on medication and special baths for 6 months now.  Oscar will remain in our program for at least 3-4 more months. Please consider helping Oscar become the true Westie he deserves to be.

Tye-Tye - January 2008
Tye-Tye's owner became ill and was unable to afford his medical care.  Tye-Tye has mange and yeast infection.
Jun 2008 Update Tye has been adopted by his foster mom. With patience, lots of baths and help from you, Tye is looking great!

Hope - January 2008
Hope and her 3 mixed puppies were found wandering down the street and taken to the pound.  All 4 dogs were heavily infested with hookworms.  Two of her puppies died and one lived.  In addition to hookworms, Hope had a severe case of Kennel Cough which turned into Pneumonia.  Hope's vet bills topped $300 just getting her well enough to be out of a crate.  Once she was up and walking around better, we noticed a pronounced limp.  X-Rays show she was injured at some point, maybe hit by a car.  Hope is about 3 years old and is a sweet gentle soul.  She never complains and is always ready to give kisses.  Hope needs surgery in both her knee and her hip so she will not be in pain when she walks.  Her foster family wants to adopt her but we need to fix Hope's leg so she can have a better life with less pain.

Update: 2/08 - Hope had her surgery and is doing great! She has been adopted! ..

Penny - June 2007
Penny is battling skin fungus.  It is in her eyes as well as her skin.   More information on Penny coming soon.

Update: 12/07 - Penny has been adopted!

Staci - June 2007
Staci is a Scottish Terrier with a bad case of skin fungus.  She will be in our program for several months.  We also treated her for mange.  She could hardly walk when we first got her in.  She gets daily baths to soothe her skin.  More information on Staci coming soon.

Update: Staci is in a permanent foster home.  She continues to improve.  She is being  treated for yeast and mange.

DiDi - May 2007
DiDi is one of the worst cases of skin problem we have seen. She also has heartworms, infections in both ears and had whipworms.  She weighed 11.8 pounds when we got her in.  She is supposed to weigh about 18 - 20 pounds considering her build.  She will be in our program for at least 5 months.  We need your help to pay for DiDi's treatment and continued care..

Update: DiDi is now Beautiful!  She has been adopted.  Thank you everyone for your contributions to DiDi's care.

Katy February 2007
Katy has a bad yeast infection.  It will take 2 - 3 months of treatment before Katy will be available to go to a new home.  Katy thanks you for your donation to Tom's Fund.

Update: Katy is now a beautiful dog and is ready to go to her new forever home! Thank you for your donations!  They made a difference!

Bear January 2007
Bear is a 10 pound Westie Yorkie mix.  We had to remove one of Bear's eyes shortly after his arrival at Westie Rescue Houston.  Thanks to Tom's Fund, we were able to afford the eye removal.

Update: Bear has been adopted!  Bear's new best buddy is a hearing impaired 10 year old girl.  Bear was chosen intentionally by this young lady and her family because he only had one eye and she can only hear out of one ear.  They are madly in love with each other!

Sugar - Intake 2005, continued care
Sugar is a permanent foster dog who has Cushings Disease and a tumor on her liver.  She is 12 years old.  Sugar has been in our program for 2 years.   Because of her age and her illness, she is not adoptable but she still has a good quality of life.  Sugar still plays, carries her dollies around in her mouth and is a very loving dog.

Update 2007.  Sugar went to the Rainbow Bridge due to Cancer in her Liver.  She is missed dearly.

Parker - continued care 2007
Parker came into our program with a very bad skin condition.

Update: After 4 months in our program,, Parker is looking much better.  His liver values are still elevated and we are awaiting test results to see if he is a Cushings Dog.  We are holding any adoption options for Parker until we know more. He still gets medicated baths, supplements and a special diet.

Update: Fall 2007.  Sadly, Parker went to the Rainbow Bridge due to extensive medical problems that affected his liver.
